Towpath Work Party – Friday 27th February 2015

Town councillor and local resident Glen Williams has just sent out this invitation to anyone who is free on 27th Feb at 10am to help maintain the area around Congleton Railway Station, the canal area and Hightown.

Our next regular monthly work party on the Macclesfield Canal in the vicinity of Congleton Station will take place on Friday 27th February. We will meet at the Queens Head car park at 10am until approx 12.30 pm.   Please wear old clothes and bring waterproofs in case of wet weather, as well as stout walking shoes or boots.

Following our January work party, which focused on an extensive litter pick from Congleton Wharf along the Macclesfield Canal to Brookhouse Lane (Bridge 72), where we collected over a dozen bags of rubbish, we will litter pick to try and maintain the whole stretch in a pleasant condition, with hopefully far less litter this time.  In addition we will undertake a small amount of further vegetation cutting along the towpath where overhanging branches are an issue as well as starting to clear some of the vegetation around an old historic ramp that used to lead up to the former canal lengthsman’s cottage.

Early next week, a walk along the length of towpath as it passes through Congleton will be undertaken with the local Canal and Rivers Trust (CRT) supervisor to identify plans for the coming months to hopefully include towpath soft back repairs and towpath improvements along this well-used stretch.

NB. Cllr Glen Williams and Congleton Town Council are working with the Canal and Rivers Trust, with support from local MP Fiona Bruce, Congleton Partnership and Northern Rail.
